On the Bright Side, a short documentary by Thi Doan, will be shown as part of the 4:30 PM shorts program entitled Women’s Stories: In Our Own Words and will screen at the Washington National Cathedral on Sunday, October 28.
As Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese 1975, Cau Hong was separated from her family while trying to flee the city. Hong never lost hope and would eventually reunite with her family in the United States. Now 83, Hong’s life is a story of enduring faith, optimism and determination against all odds.
Thi Doan (Director/Writer/Producer/Editor) was born and raised in Vietnam. She graduated from the San Francisco Film School in 2017. Her short documentary “On the Bright Side,” has screened at the Legacy Film Festival on Aging, Southern Margins International Short Film Festival, and was awarded an honorable mention at Asians on Film Festival. Her thesis narrative film Step by Step was also selected as a semi-finalist of the Student World Awards and was screened at the Women’s Film Festival in San Diego, and at the International Film Festival of South Asia in Toronto.
